第五日 篠栗八十八ヶ所 (2)

天気予報になかった（？）雨がふったらしく、道は濡れている。用心に小さい折りたたみ傘をもってお遍路さん２日目をスタートする。８８ケ所あるお寺のうち、お客を寄せるノウハウがあり、潤っているお寺は恐らく１０本の指で十分数えられるほどしかない、というのが私の印象だ。

ひょっとすると５本でも十分かもしれない。札所の一番であり、横になっている大きな仏様で有名な南蔵院が恐らくトップ中のトップ。ここは拝観料もとらないが、その代わり寝姿のブッダの入り口でソフトアイスクリームが売られていて、ブッダを眺められる位置に座れる席が３０も用意されている。

来る人来る人がアイスクリームを買い求め、座ってアイスクリームをなめている。ブッダの目前でぺろぺろ舐めるなんてお行儀悪い、とは南蔵院のお坊さんは思わないらしい。

もっともブッダも横になられリラックスしてるのだから「ま、いいか・・・」ってことなのかな？？何とも心憎いサービスというか、商売上手！

一方小さな札所は近隣の方が納経所となり、管理しているか、そういう方もいまやなさそう、と思われる札所もあって、すっかり荒れ果て、ホコリをかぶっている。小さくても、お像が清潔に保たれていると、なにかほっとするし、もう長い事誰もお参りに来てないような札所はいかにも時の流れに飲み込まれているようで寂しい限りだ。

今日もワルターの計算では３５０００歩歩いたということなので、私の短い脚だと３８０００歩にはなっているかな？と思っている。折りたたみ傘は出番のない快晴だった。    

It had rained lightly during the night and in the morning a fresh wind almost blows us off the narrow path on which we start our second day of hiking. It was actually supposed to be "only" 17 kilometres, but somehow the chief navigator made a (slight) mistake and it ended up being 26 kilometres.

We follow Hirota-san's hiking map and only fail to find one path, which is totally overgrown and no longer recognisable as a path. After just 100 metres we give up and take the slightly longer route on a forest path. As yesterday, well-preserved and well-kept temples alternate with those that have been badly damaged by the ravages of time.

Longer stretches today lead along "real" old pilgrim paths through vast bamboo forests, where there is a loud noise every few seconds. No, it's not bears ambushing us, it's just the bamboo "growing". After we have conquered the first mountain with some difficulty, we have to cross the noisy main road and climb another 300 metres in altitude. At the top is the "Owl Temple", or Fukuro in Japanese.

Fukuro means "owl" in Japanese. A second meaning is "free from worries", just like the famous castle in Potsdam/Germany.

Already a little weak in the legs, we reach the highlight of the pilgrimage, the "Reclining Buddha". 

In a single moment, I manage to photograph it without any tourists. It is teeming with visitors, including many foreigners, who must have had apparently behaved so badly in the past that almost everything they did here is forbidden: No drones, no selphie stick, no video, no shouting around, no tattoos, no shorts, no "breezy" clothes etc.

Yes, the bronze statue (41 metres long and weighing 300 tonnes) is not easily forgotten.It dates back to 1899 and is dusted off every New Year by hundreds of hard-working people with feathers on long sticks. Come and have a look. It's worth it.

Today could actually end here, but according to Hitota-san's map we have one more mountain to climb. From its highest temple we stagger to the railway station, from where the train departs before our eyes. The next one arrives in 30 minutes! O.K. If it has to be!!

第四日 篠栗八十八ヶ所 (1)

今日は地元の人達と話す機会に恵まれた。まずは篠栗四国８８ヶ所のホームページ管理人の広田さんが篠栗駅で出迎えてくれた。

ワルターは旅行前に広田さんとメール交換を始め、広田さんは私たちが来ることを知って、駅まで来てくれ、最初のお寺まで一緒に歩いてくださった。彼の案内と情報のお陰で、スタートも行程
も迷うことがなかった。

次に遍路道の一部を毎日の散歩道にしている７７歳のご婦人。ご主人を亡くされて、博多から篠栗に引っ越されて７年。「山も川もある篠栗はいい所！」と仰っていた。

ダム湖の近くの見晴らし台のところでは本当はバイク狂の中年男性二人に会う。今日は車にテント道具だの寝袋、たっぷりの水を持参、野営する予定という。

ワルターが自由の身の男性達を思わず羨む発言。一人が「僕の実家は○○番札所のすぐ隣」というので、ワルターが写真を見せたら、「そうそうこの隣だよ」とニコニコ顔に。もう一人も「伊豆には行ったことがある。下田とか浄蓮の滝の名前があがる。

行程の最後の方にお坊さんとも話す。彼によると、多分スペイン風邪のことだと思うが、１７０年前ごろ疫病が流行った時に、篠栗の８８ケ所が始まったとのこと。四国のお寺さんから砂をもらってきたとか・・。そのほかにも何人かと言葉を交わしたが、みんなとてもオープンで親切で、ただただ楽しい出会いを求めているだけという感じに無理がなく、自然なのが関東と違うんじゃない、と思った。

３５０００歩歩いたとワルターが言うので、私は恐らく４００００歩ぐらい歩いた計算かもしれない。疲れたけれど、明日は体も慣れてくるだろうし、地元の人との交流のお陰で気持ちのいい一日だった。一つ残念なのは、四国のお遍路と違い、沢山のお寺が無人で、手入れが全然行届かないどころか、忘れ去られているが如くの状況にあることだ。これでは篠栗の８８ヶ所を他人に勧められない・・・。

The first day of our pilgrimage begins at Sasaguri railway station. Hirota-san is already waiting for us there to accompany us to the first temple. Hirota-san has been looking after the pilgrimage route in Sasaguri since he retired. I learnt everything I needed from him and also copied his description of the route from the Internet. Just like that! Thank you, Hirota-san! You've helped us a lot. If Yumiko had known that there was also a reporter from a local newspaper there, she would certainly have put on better clothes.

The path is surprisingly well signposted and well maintained. Firstly, it leads through the narrow streets of the town up into the mountains.

We only meet a few people on the way and certainly no other pilgrims - apart from two women who have taken the bus to the highest temple (600 metres above sea level) and are now walking down. 

As in Shikoku, there are some particularly well-maintained temples here and others that deserve more "tidying up". They simply lack the necessary financial support. They can't afford it with the 100 Yen they get from pilgrims.

At the end of the approximately 22 kilometres, we realise that we are slowly getting older. Although only about 30% of the route is on small tarmac roads with virtually no traffic, the soles of our feet are burning. At around 16:00 we reach a deserted railway station, which can only be reached by climbing many steps.

We fall happily but exhausted onto our beds in the hotel. 

The first day has been successfully ticked off. We have visited 27 out of 88 temples without exception. Tomorrow we continue!

第三日 倉敷 - 岩国 - 門司 - 篠栗

私達の泊っている安ホテルは職人さん達が出張して仕事する時に利用するような宿で、昨日ホテルに戻った時にはホテル目のku前の駐車場はすでにそれらしきバンのような車に占領されていて、我々は少し離れたところの駐車場にありついた。それで、今朝もきっとそういう種族が多いだろうからと、少し早めにブッフェ式朝食をとりに部屋をでた。

何しろ我々の旅は２泊３日ではなく１２泊１３日ぐらいなので、一泊一人一万円でも高くつきすぎる。おまけに歩き旅とあっては、ホテルに戻って何かを楽しむどころが、お風呂に入ってバタンキュー式の過ごし方だから、豪華版のホテルでは勿体ない、ということもある。（少し負け惜しみ・・・！）

今日の行動に見合った腹具合をホテルの朝ご飯で確保し、岩国へ。思ったより観光客は少ない。それでも中国語を韓国語は聞こえてきた。

錦帯橋だけでなく山の上のお城も見ることに決め、ゴンドラとのセット券を購入する。かなり良心的な料金で、しかも駐車料金は土日しかとらないらしい。錦帯橋は５０年に一度、技術の伝承のために作り替えられる。錦帯橋の裏側を見ると規則的な模様で複雑だか、とても美しい。お城まで訪ねていく観光客は極一部らしく、山の上の人は疎らだが、静かで趣があってなかなか心地よい。

今日の次のプログラムは門司。門司港レトロと名付けられた一角をみることにした。明治・大正に建てられた西洋風の建物を模しているのか、建て直したのか？三井倶楽部という迎賓館を見学。アインシュタインが泊って講演もした場所であったらしい。ワルターは同国人ということで、興味深そうに見ていた。海峡を31階から見下ろせる展望台にも上る。壇ノ浦や巌流島（佐々木小次郎と宮本武蔵）がどこにあるか知らなかったが、どちらも展望台から見られる対岸にあることが分かった。

門司からはすこし県道などフツウの道を通って、篠栗にむかうことにした。高速ばかり使っていると、どんな場所が掴みにくい。ところが、走ってみてガッガリしたのは、全国展開のお店の看板ばかりが目につきーガスト、眼鏡市場、イオンなどなどー結局、自分の住んでいる所と大差がない。どこでその差を感じられるだろう・・・？？確かに伊東に錦帯橋はないけれど！

The third day of our journey begins with the third castle! We take the motorway from Kurashiki to Iwakuni. The town has been famous for its beautiful bridge (Kintaikyo) over the Nishiki River for 350 years. A taifun destroyed the entire bridge in 1950. What the water doesn't do, craftsmen from Iwakuni do, because every 50 years they tear the bridge completely apart and rebuild it.

The last time this was done was in 2003, with the younger generation learning from the "old ones" how to rebuild it. The wood comes from a nearby forest planted especially for this purpose. In the past, only samurai were allowed to cross the bridge. The common people used boats.

The castle, rebuilt in 1962 according to old plans, stands above the town. It had to be demolished in the turmoil of the Japanese Civil War around 1608 because the victorious shogun only allowed one castle in the losers' provinces - and Iwakuni lost!

We continue over a large bridge to Moji, the first town in Kyushu on our journey. In the 19th century, trade mainly in coal to China flourished from here. 

All the big trading houses had their offices here in buildings built in an European style. Even Albert Einstein spent a few days in one of these villas on a lecture tour of Japan in 1922.

We travel along country roads to our final destination for the day, Sasaguri. In a cheap "business hotel" I somehow manage to get into the bathtub - but not out - it's so small and tiny. The pilgrimage begins tomorrow - without a lecture by Albert Einstein!

第二日 岡山 － 倉敷

天気予報は殆ど当たり！幸い雨と言っても小雨で、ザーザー降りじゃないので大助かり。
昨日書いたように、今日は瀬戸内海の直島巡りの予定がお目当ての美術館が月曜休館で急遽、岡山城＋後楽園を目指すことになった。お城脇に車を停めたら、となりの人は千葉県の成田からレンタカーでやってきたイタリア人カップルだった。

と、こんな具合に、あらゆる所に外国人観光客で、これもグーグルマップで目指すところへ簡単にたどり着ける技術が進んだこと、日本円が超安い通貨になり、安価な旅行先になったからか？って思う。まだ傘をさして歩いた後楽園だか、お城見学後はすっかり雨が上がり、お日様が照りだして暑いくらいに。

後楽園は日本の三大公園の名に恥じない、（造園の際の）計算も日々の手入れも隅々まで行き届いた公園だった。岡山に来て、これだけしか見ないのでは勿体ない、ということで吉備津神社と最上（さいじょう）稲荷も見てきた。吉備津神社は一見の価値あり。

倉敷に戻りアイビースクエアの中にあるクラボウの歴史館を興味深く見た。広大な工場を日本各地に数多く持っていた全盛期のクラボウの前身。今ではすっかり多角経営を余儀なくされているが、当時は繊維一筋で膨大な富を手に入れることができたとみえる。従業員の教育や生活にも気を配れる賢人の経営者が続いた様子もうかがえた。

明日からの天気予報はどうやら私達に味方してくれる様子。とにかく明後日からの歩きの日にはあまり濡れたくはないのです・・・。

Today we actually wanted to go to the island of Naoshima. But Yumiko forgot in her “travel planning” that all the museums are closed on Monday and there's no point in going there. So we'll just go to Okayama. It's not far away, but it takes a while if you take the “By-Pass”. It's a traffic jam in the morning.

後楽園　Korakuen

While it's still drizzling, we visit the famous Korakuen Park, which has supposedly remained unchanged for 400 years. There must be an army of gardeners taking care for this large area. But you don't see them. Do they work at night?

I was here with Maja a few years ago, but didn't visit the inside of the castle. Today was a good opportunity to do so because not so many tourists had “invaded” the castle shortly after it opened. Unfortunately, the old castle was badly damaged during the last months of the war and partly burnt down. Today's castle is made of concrete and has an elevator. Only the former form has been preserved.

Inside there are now some very interesting exhibitions on the history of the castle.

It is too early to go back to Kurashiki. We therefore visit two famous places nearby, the Kibizu Shrine and the Saijo Temple.

吉備津神社　Kibizu Shrine

The shrine has thousands of motif boards for a successful university entrance examination. The temple is said to be visited by tens of thousands of people on New Year's Day. Today we were alone.

Back in Kurashiki, we visit what was once the largest and most important weaving mill in Japan. From 1880, the best fabrics were produced here under the management of the Ohara family. The founder's son, Ohara Magosaburo, is said to have introduced “humane” working conditions for the first time in Japan and built schools and hospitals for his workers. Does that still exist today?

I don't think so! Because there will be no more caregivers in humane old people's homes in the future, I will probably have to look after my wife on my own!

第一日 天城 － 姫路 ー 倉敷

４時過ぎ起床、５時５分前に天城を出発。伊豆スカイラインは早朝で職員がいなくて無料。たった４５分で沼津・長泉の新東名入口に到着したのは”世界的な記録だ！”とワルターは言っています。以降スムーズに高速道路を走り、伊勢湾岸を通過したあとに初めての休憩＋ガソリン補給。

最初の目的地姫路になんと１０時半到着。日曜日とあって、観光客で溢れているかと戦々恐々としていたのですが、一方通行に誘導された城内は人の流れがとてもスムーズで混んでいる感じが全くしないほどでした。西の丸の見学も終わって私達がお城を離れる午後も一時頃になって、観光客がどっと向かってきました。半数が外国人といっていいほどでしたが、どこの説明も英語と日本語で書かれ、世界遺産に選ばれ、そのタイトルを保持しようと頑張っている様子が窺われました。姫路城は姿が綺麗なだけでなく、他のお城と比べ物にならないほど規模が大きいです。

姫路の次の目的地は倉敷で、今日はここ泊まり。まずホテルのチェックインを済ませてから倉敷の美観地区と言われているところをさらっと散歩しました。ここも世界からの観光客が来ていました。美観地区と対照的なのが駅周辺と駅前から続くアーケードの商店街。伊東と同様閑散として閑古鳥が鳴いている状況。悲しい現実を突きつけられているみたい！

 本来明日は宇野港から直島という瀬戸内海の島に行き、地中に埋もれて建てられた美術館（安藤忠雄設計）に行く予定でしたが、出発一日前に月曜日は休館日ということに気が付き、「直島は帰りによろうか・・？」と変更を余儀なくされました。どこか抜けている私・・・・！

そんな訳で、明日は倉敷の美観地区の中で開いている施設を見学したり、岡山へ戻って後楽園＋岡山城を見ようかと思案しています。ま、明日も足の向くまま、気の向くまま      で・・・。

Every year, my wife forces me to go on a longer trip with her. I always pretend that I don't really want to go, but then I'm happy to go. This year we're going to Kyushu because I've never been there before.
So we set off from Amagi at around 05:00 today and got to Himeji quickly and without any traffic jams. The last time I was there was in 2008 with my daughter Maja and my Filipino IT-Mate Rhomel.

Apart from the castle, there is nothing worth seeing in Himeji. But the castle makes up for this deficiency several times over. It is a marvel of architecture. The craftsmen who built the castle from 1560 onwards deserve my highest praise.

How did they erect the two 27 meter high beams inside? Without a crane! But I have to get something interesting to report. Inside the castle there is a nice exhibition listing the various family clans. Only one stands out among the honourable samurai. A certain Sakakibara-san, head of the clan in the 17th century, was dishonourably dismissed by the Daimyo in Edo because he had spent the equivalent of 40,000,000 yen on geishas during a "business trip" to Edo. The clan and the castle were broke!

 

We drive on to Kurashiki at around 3.00 pm. It's drizzling. I remembered the town with its old neighbourhood along a small river more beautifully. It is now full of souvenir shops with all sorts of odds and ends that you don't need.

We want to go back tomorrow and hope not to see so many tourists.
